I Miss The Sun?!

When I left for work today, the sky was pitch black and full of stars... when I came home from work, the sky looked the same.  Granted, it was a 13-hour day, but pretty much all weekdays are.

I look forward to this first dark day every year.

I am definitely a night owl, and get my second wind after the sun goes down.  When it is dark while I'm home, I have more energy and it feels like I have far more time than usual.  My creative juices tend to flow, and I get a bit more spiritually-minded.  I love having the sunset to mark out the transition from work to play, as it seems easier to leave thoughts of work behind.  It is heavenly!

This year is quite different:  I miss the sun.

It means I can't hike after work every day anymore, that the walks with the dog are far too short and infrequent.  It means that the tomato plants are on their last batch of scraggly fruit, and that the harvests are ending.  I am checking on the plants by flashlight, if at all.  It is also far more difficult to wake up... especially when the puppy is dead asleep and won't help me wake by pouncing when my first alarm goes off.  I have 3 separate alarms, and hit the snooze button on all three this morning.

Somehow this year I fell in love with sunlight.  I became a gardener, a sunbather, a dog walker, a swimmer, a hiker, a dog park socialite, an outdoor coffee roaster, a feeder of birds and explorer of the neighborhood.  I became dependent upon activity during daylight hours.

I need to find a way to reinvigorate my love of the moon.

It's a time for crafty projects and painting, winter squash and crock pot dishes, weight-lifting and yoga, the scent of pine or mint or cinnamon, reading and hot tea and warm blankets, cuddling and toasty fires in the hearth.

Get with the program Kendra, it's time to remember that this is the favorite season!
