I misplaced my green thumb.

How is the garden going?  Well...

I wonder if I can only have so much fertility success at once.  Like, in order to get uterus success, I had to trade in my green thumb.

80% of the seedlings I planted did not come up for various reasons... weird mold in my potting soil, garden gnomes with a bad sense of humor, or I somehow pissed off Demeter.

The 20% that did sprout (which were pretty much only the ones in the rehydrated coconut-husk pellets), just STOPPED growing after getting out their cotyledons.  They were supposed to continue to grow, and then I'd plan them deeper, and once they grew some more, I'd plant them even deeper.  To some I added extra lighting, some got light fertilization, some had normal growing conditions.  Nothing.

Never fear!

Tomorrow I'm making a trip down to the corner pool/nursery store to see what they have in terms of tomato, pepper, and squash seedlings.  After that, it's a trip to OSH to see if I can find a little more variety.  I had absolutely fantastic luck with OSH seedlings last year, so at least I know we'll have something edible in the garden.

I'll also be direct-seeding some things like the squash, and am restarting even more seeds indoors today with fresh potting soil.

I mean, it's not like the garden is currently empty.  We've been having salads and burrito fillings and soups until we're nearly sick of kale and mustard greens, and I recently started juicing it to use it up in time for planting the rest o' the stuff.  Some of the mustard, cilantro, and radish have been left to grow like crazy, and I'm hoping to get some free seed out of them, so I'll transfer them to pots if needed.

This is a photo I took today:

So many winter greens, so little time.

In the foreground you can see kale and mustard, and the middle left bed has a few radishes going to seed.  The middle right has the majority of the greens (mustard, kale, chard, garlic, cilantro, chocolate mint), and the one in the back that can barely be seen has a smattering of bull's blood beets and a giant parsley.

There are also about 6 volunteer tomato seedlings that popped up next to those radishes.  The tomatoes that were growing over that spot were Lemon Boys and most likely Sunsugars (they were all twined together, but I am guessing I didn't miss picking up any giant Lemon Boys!), both of which are hybrids so the seed would not come out true.  I am trying to decide if I want to use precious sun space to keep one or two of the seedlings, just as an experiment to see what kinds of tomatoes would come out.

The last risk of frost is in just TWO DAYS!  Ye gods, I better get my black thumb in gear.  And I better get that juicer going full-time.

How're your garden plans fleshing out?
