Pretending to be a working dog.
She isn't supposed to carry any substantial weight until she is 18 months old and her bones stop growing... at 9 months old, she has a long way to go.
The plan up until 18 months is that she will learn to wear it, and carry her own plastic bags and/or waste. I like that the contrast with the red and black is so intense, since it'll make her easier to see... and there is also a reflective strip on the sides for nighttime. Theoretically, wearing a pack is supposed to make her feel more like she has a special job, so she'll be on better behavior (not jumping on people).
I have a special job! And I need a trim!
After that, the plan is for her to carry her own water on hikes... since she is black she soaks up the heat of the sun, and she drinks more than we do. For $17 on Amazon, and considering how many years of use we'll get out of it, the backpack feels like a pretty good deal. Carrying some weight will also give her exercise that is more intense, so it'll get out more of that angsty energy.
And hey, if there's an emergency, we can pack her up with her own food, water, documentation, and toys, and head for the hills.
