After realizing how incredibly much food I was getting for 2014, and that making my own oxygen-free buckets was cheaper, I made some changes. I reduced the amount for 2014 a bit, and increased the long-term storage a bit. Some pails will contain two types of food at once.
For long-term (25 years) storage, in a total of ten 5-gallon buckets with oxygen absorbers and mylar bags:
- Lentil, 50lb
- Black bean, 50lb
- Red bean, 34.2lb
- Garbanzo bean, 33.3lb
- Millet, 35.8lb
- Oat groats, 50lb
- Cornmeal, 33.3lb
- Basmati rice, 36lb
- Flour, 15lb
For the year of 2014, in a total of ten 5-gallon gamma seal buckets*:
- Lentil, 50lb... (236 servings)
- Black bean, 50lb... (247 servings)
- Red bean, 15.8lb... (71 servings)
- Garbanzo bean, 41.6lb... (188 servings)
- Millet, 14.2lb... (64 servings)
- Oat groats, 50lb... (540 servings)
- Cornmeal, 16.7lb... (216 servings)
- Popcorn, 50lb... (800 servings)
- Flour, 27lb.... (432 servings)
- Basmati rice, 24lb... (240 servings)
And items to be purchased from Costco over the year:
- More flour, 60lb... (960 servings)
- More basmati rice, 40lb... (400 servings)
- Quinoa, 12lb... (108 servings)
Total pounds for 2014: 411.3lb
Total servings for 2014: 4502
Total servings per person per day for 2014: 6
That sounds far more realistic! Standard allotments of carbs per day are 6-11 servings, but we currently eat at the low end of carbs. If we could use more, I'll add in extra flour and rice as the cheapest staples.
What do you think... still way too much? Not enough?
*We have 11 food-safe buckets with gamma seal lids, but 1 goes toward dog food after we open a bag.
