Fire on Mt. Diablo

Speaking of National Preparedness Month, these are some photos I just took of the fire on Mt. Diablo.

2:15pm:  Please let that be a sharknado

It is kind of ironic that right after I blog about not being hardcore about emergency preparedness, this happens.  Maybe the gods are trying to tell me something after all.  I may have to rethink my stance.

3:15pm:  A lovely column

It is awfully close to our house, less than 5 miles away.  My husband the ex-firefighter says there is no danger to us due to the terrain though.  The only danger is asthma once night falls and the smoke settles.  I'll take a few extra puffs tonight.

So far the fire has eaten anywhere between 15 and 170 acres (conflicting news reports), with the potential to consume up to 500 acres, and is 10% contained.

Update, 7:30pm:  The fire has now consumed 450 acres, and some power lines are threatened, and evacuations have occurred for people 4 miles from us.  Fire is still 10% contained, which doesn't really mean anything.  We just had to close up the house due to the smoke.  Item to add to future emergency prep:  particulate respirators for smoke.

 4:15:  Smear in the sky

8pm:  Flames crest over the top of the mountain

I think this counts as apocalypse porn.

On a side note, when we started trying to find the right house to buy, the first one we looked at was right where the evacuation zone is.  It was on a really steep section of land, full of brush, with dry rot on the supporting beams (it was on stilts due to the steepness)... Ryan disliked the fire risk of the place, and said the first thing he would have to do if we bought the place would be to clear all the brush.  I feel bad for whoever bought that place.
